Each month we bring you behind the scenes to put the well deserved spotlight on our staff that help us make a difference to communities throughout the North East. This month meet Donna Kelly, County Durham Resilience Coordinator.
My current role with Pioneering Care Partnership (PCP) is Coordinator for County Durham Resilience service, working to support people in the community around emotional wellbeing and resilience.
I have worked within PCP for 14 years working on many wellbeing projects, before working for the PCP I had a couple of jobs which I feel have really helped and supported me in my roles within PCP.
On leaving school and realising that collage was not for me I tried to go in the Army only for them to say I had a heart murmur, so I could unfortunately not go in at that time. I have always liked sport, so I went on to work in the fitness industry on a YTS and this entitled me to learn on the job which I find suits me better. At the age of 18 I felt that I needed more and tried out for the Army again which I was successful and went on to have an enjoyable career traveling the world and seeing places and situations I never thought I would. I only left the Army as I was injured so they stuck me on guard, lifting a barrier for eight months - I needed a new challenge.
My current role varies from day to today. Along with managing staff I also see and support clients of my own whilst attending promotional events and delivering service talks to promote our service. Supporting clients can range from accessing groups and supporting them to attend the groups and also helping them build their confidence to attend themselves. I make sure that if client I am working with needs extra support due to their complex needs I will access that support. Every client I work with has different support needs which can range from very low level mental health to severe mental health which at times can be very challenging but very rewarding.
I am really enjoying managing a team of Resilience Workers. I love to build a great relationship with the team and always have that open door approach as I feel this is very important. I always try to lead a team how I have been led in the past, which has been very well. I feel if you have a good team, you can conquer anything. I do enjoy listening to how the teams work and seeing the outcomes that they achieve with their clients which is absolutely amazing. We have an awesome team with so many different skills and personalities and I feel very proud to be part of it.
I have gained many qualifications while working for PCP, the one that stands out for me is my Level 5 in management. The reason for this is because I have never believed that I could ever do anything like this due to having learning difficulties. Since school I have really struggled academically and still do - so the Level 5 always seemed out of my league, but with the belief and support from others I passed and gained the qualification, which I am very proud of.
I have had some very fun times working for PCP and have made some great memories along with working with some amazing people who have helped and supported me in my journey, and I hope it continues.
